Vine Age

Watch as wine professionals debate the relative merits of old versus young vines and whether vine age makes a difference in the quality of a wine. What exactly constitutes an “old” vine? How does vine age effect viticultural and winemaking decisions, terroir expression, clonal expression, ageabilty and the overall quality of pinot noir and chardonnay? Moderator Alder Yarrow addresses these questions, accompanied by a panel of IPOB winemakers.

Defining Ripeness in Pinot Noir

Ripeness is one of the great topics of debate in the wine world today. Is ripeness entirely subjective or can it be quantified with scientific measures such as alcohol percentages and pH? The question of what is ripe has become one of the most controversial and divisive questions amongst winemakers, wine critics and consumers. Moderator Dr. Jamie Goode takes on this thorny topic together with wine writer Jordan MacKay and a panel of IPOB winemakers.

Relevance and Purpose in California Chardonnay

Chardonnay remains the most popular wine in California. But what is its purpose? Despite the “Anything But Chardonnay” backlash of the last decade, why do some of the best winemakers in California continue to tackle this protean grape? Is it a profound vehicle to express terroir, or just base material for a winemaking style? If the former, how is terroir expression in Chardonnay best achieved? These are questions that are relevant not just for California, but also for Burgundy and the rest of the Chardonnay producing wine world.
